75 YEARS OF THE WEEKLY NEWSPAPER „NIN“
One of our most important weekly magazine NIN - weekly informative newspaper - celebrates on January 2010. a rare and significant jubilee - 75 years from founding (1935). It was started by a group of journalists and intellectuals from Belgrade, on the initiative of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, and after the abolition of the 6th January dictatorship. The first number was issued on 26th January 1935, but it was seized by the police. On 7th September 1935, the magazine was permanently banned. It is remembered for its editing, and analytical reviews and critiques of the situation in the country.
The new, after - war NIN was started by a group of talented journalists from Belgrade who were mostly editors of „Mladi borac“ (Young Fighter). It appeared in January 7th, in 1951. With a series of new and resumed columns, daring treatment of actual problems and striking way of describing events, it stood out of the grayness and formality of those days press, and very soon won more educated public. The founding team consisted of: Najdan Pašić (first chief editor), Stevan Majstorović, Đorđe Radenković, Dragoslav Zira Adamović and Dragan Stojiljković. NIN began with the printing of 50.000 which later constantly grew, and after the year 1964. and several crisis, it reached the record average number of 150.000 copies per year. It became the „most Yugoslav“ newspaper because polls showed that a little less than half of the circulation was sold abroad. The NIN’s traditional prize for the novel of the year was established in 1954. which greatly contributed to the reputation of the magazine in cultural circles.
On 4th April 1970, NIN appeared in its news magazine’s „clothes“ with a bigger editorial staff and Frane Barbieri as editor-in-chief.
NIN has always been in the center of serious discussions, and always promoted freedom of expression. It has a recognizable position: although a mass medium, it is built upon lasting values, far - reaching needs of the society, directions of cultural movement and development of phenomenon instead of being occupied with daily politics, isolated events and scandals.
Since March 27th 2003, NIN is printed in colour.
