About Jugomarka

A short history

From its beginning until today, the postage stamp was, because of its wide distribution, collecting and propaganda attraction, the object of special attention for postal administrations as well regarding its graphic and artistic realization as its themes and motifs. Stamps are papers of value, like money, and they are reproduced on rubberized paper with protective perforation. Special stamps are issued in limited number of copies and are never reissued. This fact assures the seriousness of the Postal authority itself and the confidence of collectors. The postage stamp is the ambassador of the country and presents historical events, famous personalities, nature, flora, fauna, sports events, jubilees and also has educational function. For the realization of every new issue, expert collaboration is necessary, so “Jugomarka” collaborates with various cultural and scientific institutions (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, museums, libraries and institutes). Throughout the history, the printing has been done in Vienna (National Printing House), in Holland (Enschede Printing House), in the United States (Unicover), Switzerland (Courvoisier), Belgrade (Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins – ZIN) and in Novi Sad (Forum).

Taking developed countries as a model, and according to the law of January 25th 1866, the postal services were rearranged and, stamps were introduced as payment for postal taxes.

The first postage stamp was made on May 13th in the year 1866. – a newspaper stamp, in several colors, face value of 1 and 2 “para”, with the coat of arms of the Principality of Serbia; the sketch was done by Anastas Jovanović, painter and lithographer; National printing firm from Belgrade.

The first regular postage stamp in Serbia was issued on July 13th 1866. The stamp motif was the portrait of the Serbian ruler, Prince Mihailo Obrenović, and the drawing was done on wood by the Austrian painter and lithographer W. Katzler; Imperial national printing house from Vienna – yellow color. This emission consists of yellow, pink and blue stamp, with face value of 10, 20 and 40 “para”.
In the name of the PTT system of Serbia, “Jugomarka” is responsible for the realization of annual programs of postage stamps issues.
